Science of Reading Bundle
Science of Reading Bundle
This bundle focuses on the five components of reading: Phonics, phonological/phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. All of these skills must be learned for a child to be a reader. Collectively the activities in this bundle support these components and hopefully can become a starting point for work on the shelves of your environment.
Updated ABC Chart: This chart is updated with new /b/ and /m/. This chart is a useful reference for a child if they are searching for a sound but can’t remember, are writing with the Movable Alphabet and need a little support finding sounds, or as a simple handwriting sheet. There is one for reference (black text), a blank and one for tracing (grey text).
Updated Sound Deck/Sound Booklet: This can be printed, laminated and cut into cards. Use this for sound practice every day or as often as possible. You present this as “A apple /a/”, “B bird /b/”. Find a demo of it HERE. Children can also trace the letters, cut, hole punch and use a book ring to make a sound booklet.
Rhyming Scavenger Hunt: Getting children moving is so important! This scavenger hunt is a rhyming hung. Print and hang the large labels around your space. Print a pile of the student sheets and oer a clipboard and pencil. Child finds the large cards and writes the word next to its rhyming partner. For example, if they find the large card “rat”, they would copyright “rat” next to the picture of a hat. The rhyming words are: hat, twig, dish, spoon, blocks and one.
Reading Comprehension Illustrations and Sentences: This may seem like a simple task but it is an important tool and learning device for children to start asking questions about what they are reading/listening to. Print and cut the illustrations into cards. Have them randomly in front of the child. Print the sentence strips double sided (“answers” are on the back). Read the sentence strips in order, laying each one down in a line as you go. Go through all of them and then read the first sentence again. Ask the child to match the picture, go through each sentence, matching pictures. Then ask the child to retell the story, using the pictures as their prompts (they are NOT reading or attempting to read these words, you can even take them away when you ask them to retell the story). Print the “Question” card as a reminder to everyone that you have a lot of questions about the story. Ask the questions and have the child answer them best they can. This is a tool to teach children how to listen to, retell and ask questions about what they are listening to/have read.
Word Reading: Print on cardstock and cut. Have single consonants in one pile and the double letters in another. This is an exercise in fluency. Flip through both piles and have the child read real words and silly words. Emphasizing that the double letters can be said together automatically since they know what sound they make. As the child practices, speed up the game!
Segmenting Compound Words: Print four pages of pink and green circles and cut out. Print words and illustrations double sided and cut into cards. Put circles in two piles in front of child. Show the child the picture and read the word as one. “Cupcake.” The child’s job is to segment it into two words while physically representing the two words as well. “Cup” (put down pink circle) “cake” (put down green circle).
Segmenting Words into Phonemes: Print Red and Blue circles, cut and glue back to back on a large popsicle stick. This acts as a paddle. Print words and illustrations double sided. Show child the picture and tell them what it is. “Sheep”. They will break the word into phonemes while flipping the paddle. /Sh/ (red) /ee/ (blue) /p/ (red).
Sound Bingo calling Sounds: Pick sounds from a basket and the child covers the corresponding keyword that matches the sound.
