Science of Reading II Bundle
Science of Reading II Bundle
In this bundle you will find “on the shelf” work for the Montessori classroom that is rooted in the science of reading. This can be used as a stand alone bundle OR as a sort of “add-on” pack to my first SOR bundle.
Inside you will find:
Phonics
Alphabet Line-Up with Keyword Objects: Print and Laminate. I mounted the “roll” portion on sticky backed cork for more stability but mounting on cardboard or felt would be similar. For the objects, you can print and laminate or skip the laminating and modge podge onto two inch wooden tiles for longer lasting materials. Children lay out roll and match beginning sounds to letter.
Phonics Go-Fish: Print and laminate. Print out 2 sets. You can double side print with the fish on the back for a more “ocial” looking deck! Children can either play letter names or letter sounds. One child will choose another and say “do you have a /m/?” and that child will either hand over the /m/ or say “go fish” if they don’t have it. Child will choose from the pile. If they get a match, they lay them down in front of them. Whoever gets rid of all their cards first is the winner. This is double sided.
Phonemic Awareness
Add on Pack (can be used on its own) for Phoneme Segmentation Game: Make two paddles (one for modeling, ideally) so that one side is red and the other blue, glue a thick popsicle stick in the middle for the handle. Flip the paddle for every phoneme in the word. For example, sheep would be /sh/ /ee/ /p/. This is double sided.
Chaining Find and Seek Game (or rhyming pairs): Lay all the cards out face UP in a grid. Teacher chooses a command strip and reads aloud. The child will swap beginning sounds as instructed and find the corresponding picture. Set pairs aside. Alternatively, children can simply find matching rhyming pairs without the command strips.
Phonological Awareness
Add on Pack (can be used on its own) for Compound Words: Print out five pages of pink and green circles. Laminate and cut. Make each into a pile in front of the student. Show the student the picture of the compound word (answer on the back is for the instructor). Child segments into parts using the circles as a physical representation of their answer. For example, “cupcake” would be: “cup” (slam down pink circle), “cake” (slam down green circle). This is double sided.
Onset Rime Segmenting and Sliding Charts: Student will segment words into beginning sounds and then “rest of word.” Place a finger on the square of the chart and then slide while saying the rime. “/d/ —----->og.”
Vocabulary
Add on Pack (can be used on its own) for Classroom Task Cards: Add these to your basket of other Classroom Task Cards. Children can make a visual to do list with cards or choose one to then go find that work to do.
Comprehension
Phonetic Command Sentences and Objects: Print and laminate. Cut closely around “objects”. Line objects at top of work space and then have student read each sentence one by one. After reading the sentence, have them place the corresponding objects next to the sentence. Repeat until all 10 are done.
Fluency
Roll and Read Game: Pair this board with a dice. Roll the dice, depending on what number you roll, read the line of words matching the number. This exercises CVC words, CVCC words, words with /sh/, nonsense words and magic e words.
Sound Deck: Use these in drill form and have children say the letter name and/or sound of each letter. If they get stuck, flip to the back to show the keyword to job their memory. They can also be used to play a CVC game where the first pile has all consonants, then vowels, then consonants - in three piles. Flip through the cards so that they form dierent words and have the student read as you go. This is double sided.
Each classroom should own their own download. Please help to support me by not sharing among classrooms or friends!
